I was not awarded any points for presentation, but it got the job done.
I know whenever someone posts a recipe there is a sort of “This is good. I am good. I am better than you.”. I want to nip that in the bud right now because I am a humble participant in the culinary arts. I will present things that have satisfied my low standards, and if you have similar low standards, they might satisfy you as well.
I was planning on watching the Rebels play in the Tide on Saturday(or maybe it was the other way around), and some premonition let me know that I may need some sort of food escape from an ensuing massacre. I decided while at the Farmer’s market that I would go with Guacamole. I had never made this before, so it was certainly uncharted territory. Here were my supplies. This is definitely an under 10 dollar thing if you already have the spices.
-1 yellow onion (I would use red if it is available)
-1 red bell pepper
-2 tomatoes
-2 anaheim chiles
-3 Hass avocados
-juice of 1.5 limes
-one teaspoon of cider vinegar (or another kind if you have it)
- one table spoon of Chili powder
-one table spoon of your favorite hot sauce
-mixed up salt
Prep was fairly simple:
1. Roast peppers- This can be done first as it is the most time-consuming step. Place peppers and chiles in a baking dish and brush all sides with olive oil. Keep in oven on broil for 10-15 minutes turning the peppers until most of pepper is black. Remove peppers and chiles and place in bowl covered with plastic wrap for about 15 minutes. Remove dark outer skin, seeds, and membranes inside of the peppers. Dice what remains to dime size squares.
2. Dice onion and tomatoes.
3. Remove skins of avacados, remove pits, and cut into dice size cubes. Put these into a bowl and mash to desired consistency. If you have a masher, that would work great, but I just used a meat tenderizer. Not much force is necessary.
4. Add peppers, onions, lime juice, vinegar, and seasonings. Adjust the chili powder and hot sauce depending on your heat preference. Salt to taste. I put probably a teaspoon or so. I would also add some cilantro, which I forgot.
Sorry the steps are not accompanied by pictures, but I did not anticipate it being a recipe that I would want to replicate. The roasted peppers are a must, but there is plenty of room to alter it to your own liking with more lime, jalapeno, or cilantro. Have fun, and please share the changes you made.
