I have been a working man for about 8 pay periods, and I have realized that I have not supported anything outside of myself. I have been very focused on our finances, our budgets, our savings, and I have not been thinking about anyone else. It is ridiculous that I actually have a real income for the first time in my life, but my subconscious is telling me to scrimp and save to save for me. That is all fine and good, but just like saving early leads to a larger retirement, giving early gives you the chance to help many, many more people.
The man who changed the young Kenyan’s life in the video below started when he was only 20 years old. If he had not started right then, this young man would not have been plucked out of the Kenyan slums. I spend my days around many students that do not appreciate the gift of education that many in the world yearn for. In most cases, a child from Africa aches to be able to go to school. How cool is giving someone a chance to do something that will take that chance and actually use it? Trust me, it’s cool.
It can be hard donating to a charitable organization because for all you know they are spending your money on envelopes. I find it easier to be consistent if I know that one person is counting on me. I am not saying this is the only way to help people. There are tons of areas of need for the human race and only a few are financial. 38 dollars a month is all that it costs, which would make that the smallest budget allotment I have for each month. I am a citizen of the world before I am an American, and my actions should reflect that.
Each person has different convictions, and whom they support should reflect that. Whether it’s a church, education-centered non-profit, free clinic, food bank or countless other worthy organizations, the investment is a worthy one. It is much easier to stay committed when the beneficiaries are something or someone that you truly have a heart for.
Here is a timely piece from Get rich slowly that helps in giving when times are tough. If money is not an option to give right now, time, old clothing, canned food, or old toys can really help people in these Wintry months. Audrey at The House on Normandy Lane has compiled some great ideas for serving in Memphis.
